MULTI-MEDIA FILTRATION FOR
GREATER FLOW RATES AND CLARITY
Unlike ordinary filters, which provide effective filtration only in the top few inches of the filter bed, Culligin® Hi-Flo® filters give you maximum filtering efficiency through the entire bed depth.
The secret is Culligan's three separate layers of filter minerals, each carefully selected for its precise function. The first layer collects the bulk of coarse turbidity. The middle layer removes smaller particles. Finally, a bottom layer of high-density mineral polishes the water, removing particles down to 10 microns in size.
This three stage process gives you greater water clarity, with less pressure drop than ordinary one or two-stage filters. And it allows the filter to run up to 5 times longer between backwashings!

ACTIVATED CARBON ADSORBS DISSOLVED ORGANICS, CHLORINE, ODORS, AND TASTES
All Hi-Flo Cullar filters use high activity, durable, granulated activated carbon filter media. The exact grade of carbon used, and the flow rate may vary with the contaminants and their concentrations.
Cullar.. D Plus media is used for effective adsorption of a broad range of high and low molecular weight organic contaminants. Typical applications include taste, odor and dissolved organics reduction from public water systems, and dechlorination. Cullar G media has found wide acceptance in the chemical process industries for decolorization and purification of aqueous and organic liquids. It is also used widely for dechlorination. Cullar M is a high purity carbon suitable for medical and pharmaceutical applications.
EASY, FULLY AUTOMATIC OPERATION
All Hi-Flo® Cullar filters offer fast, fully-automatic backwashing to recondition the filter medium. The process is time-initiated and controlled, or can be initiated by pushbutton whenever necessary. Typically, the filter backwashes at 10 gpm/sq. ft. for about 10 minutes, followed by a downflow filter-to-waste cycle. The timer/controller is UL listed.
AUTOMATIC VALVES, PLUS EVEN DISTRIBUTION
All Hi-Flo® Cullar filters are designed to allow the highest flow rates consistent with the substances to be removed, at minimum pressure loss. Smaller models (HR-202 through 422) use the Culligafi@ Hi-Flo 55 ful- ly automatic, self-contained cartridge valve. Larger models (HR-48 and above) have a pilot control system with a nest of hydraulically-operated valves to accomplish service, backwash, and rinse flows.
For maximum filtering effectiveness, each model is designed for uniform distribution of water flows. One layer of coarse sand underbedding covers the fine slotted radials of the hub-radial outlet distributor.

Cullsorb® filters (10 models) reduce the manganese and iron that cause water to stain fabrics, glassware and fixtures. These filters also reduce trace hydrogen sulfide which is the cause of "rotten egg" smell in water. The process uses both chemical treatment, to precipitate the unwanted minerals, and filtration to trap them. Cullsorb filters are suited to a wide variety of residential, commercial, and industrial applications requiring flow rates of up to several hundred gallons per minute.
TYPICAL APPLICATIONS:
DUAL-MEDIA FILTRATION, WITH EVEN DISTRIBUTION
Cullsorb® filters feature two layers of filter media for optimum filtration efficiency. The top layer consists of large particles of a coarse, light-weight material, which serve to trap the largest mineral particles. A deep bed of fine greensand material is next, which removes the smaller mineral particles, as well as any traces of the oxidizing chemicals used.
To help assure effective filtration, each Cullsorb® filter is designed for even distribution of service, backwash, and rinse flows. This is accomplished with multiple layers of graded underbed material, through which water can flow, on top of slotted radial arms which provide even distribution.
CHOOSE FROM TWO MODES OF OPERATION
Depending on customer need, Cullsorb filters can be operated in two modes. For most applications, the continuous feed mode is preferred. Incoming feed water is pretreated with an oxidizing chemical, usually potassium permanganate. This causes the iron and manganese particles to precipitate, so they can be effectively filtered out. When the pressure drop through the filter has increased (5 to 10 psi) from the accumulation of particles, the filter is backwashed.
Some applications, on the other hand, have characteristics that lend themselves to a "batch" mode of operation. In this mode, the filter media is "activated" by the addition of a small amount of potassium permanganate. As the raw water passes through the filter, iron and manganese are removed. In this process, each cubic foot of filter material will remove about 6,000 mg/l before exhaustion. The filter is then regenerated.
EASY, AUTOMATIC OPERATION
Whether you choose continuous or batch-type operation, both cycles are fully automatic and time-controlled; they can be initiated by timer, or by a pushbutton at time. Optional features include initiation by pressure differential switch or by pre-set volumetric meter. The timer/controllers are UL listed.
HEAVY DUTY TANKS
All filters have a baked-on phenolic epoxy lining that carries a 5-year limited warranty against internal rust- through. The Hi-FloTM 55 (20" through 42") tank exteriors are sandblasted, primed, and top coat painted for long service and attractive appearance. The Hi-Flo 50 (48" and larger) tank exteriors are sandblasted and primed, and ready to be top-coated by the end user.
INSTALLATION
All internal components of the Hi-Flo 50 model filters (except the media), face piping and valves are factory assembled. The tankage and the face piping is hydraulically tested before shipment. This factory assembly and testing reduces the installation time and labor and field error.
QUALITY CHECKED MEDIA
During the service cycle, the filter bed does all of the "work". Culligan inspects all media for compliance with exacting standards. Media is checked for effective particle size, uniformity coefficient and other tests to help assure that each filter works its best for your application.
LET YOUR CULLIGAN DEALER HELP
With 10 models, plus a wide variety of options, Cullsorb filters can meet a wide range of needs.
To help you select the right combination, we recommend you forward a sample of your water to Culligan through your independently operated Culligan dealer. The water quality analysis will help your Culligan dealer recommend the right Cullsorb filter, mode and chemicals for your needs, as well as allowing the dealer to recommend any other water treatment you may need to produce the water quality you want.
